Five White Girls Amongst Twenty Mexicans and My New Grandson, Other Stuff, Too

110707_005_001

The above picture is four of my daughters plus me. Going left to right, Tinkerbell, No-No, Me, Ewee, and Sum-Sum.

Now imagine us in a room full of Spanish-speaking-Mexican women mingled with some of their men-wished I had pictures to show you.

Ewee’s quazi mom-in-law put a baby shower on for her. It was the longest one I’ve ever attended. From forty-thirty to eight-thirty, I was trapped. Everything was Mexican. Fried food galore-stuff I wouldn’t and couldn’t eat. All game instructions were in Mexican. All introductions were in Mexican. I’m sure you get my point.

“Mom. What are they saying?” One of my daughters asked.

“Don’t worry,” I said. “I’ll figure it out.” Good thing I took Spanish, Castillion not Mexican. There is a difference, people, but I did get through it. I listened with my heart.

Lesson here, I learned what it’s like to be the minority.

Now for my grandson:

Say hello to Jordan Kyle Alvarrez. He was born July 20, 2011. He weighed 8 lbs and was 21 inches long. He also, ripped mom on the way out.

A bit of karma is already happening to Ewee. Her weight and height were the same when she was born. She also ripped me on the way out.

So if I haven’t been by your blog or left a comment, the little guy above has a lot to do with it. This week I’ll get back on track now that I’m getting used to grandma-dom.

I even downloaded several books to my Kindle this week.

The Dream Spell by Emma Daniels

The Touch by Lisa Olsen

Angel of Mercy by Lisa Olsen

My Beginning by Melissa Kline

A Repeating Life by Christy Parks

Storm Chaser by Mark R. Hunter

Box of Rocks by Karla Telega

Next week, I’ll have a book review prepared on Beth Muscat’s Triology, Remember the eyes.

That’s all for now folks!

Happy blogging, reading, and writing!

Shelly

  2. OH my dear...Jordon Kyle Alvarrez is absolutely adorable. Mui Bueno or whatever. Cute as a bug in a Mexican blanket. You are all lucky to have such an angelic blessing. Awesome and congrats!

  4. Congrats happy grandma! You're grandbaby is gorgeous. About being stuck in a restaurant full of Spanish speaking people..I can relate. Luckily, I do speak the language, but my hubby is clueless, with the exception of curse words. Great food though. :)

  5. Wow. CONGRATS!!

I've been in the minority many times in my life, and it's still unnerving, but SO SO SO good for me :D

  6. Thanks for the congrats, Jolene. And yes, I now know what others feel like when they are a different language and nationality. Unnerving it is.

  7. Congratulations on grandmotherhood! He's absolutely precious!
Well, I've never experienced a shower where I didn't understand the language, but I was at one where the blessing before the meal (which was absolutely fine) turned into a 15 minute sermon (at a wedding shower. by the groom's mother). We weren't sure when we could stop bowing our heads. It was...different.

  8. My sister is married to a Hispanic so I can relate to how you felt. Every time she has a birthday party for one of her children or she does Thanksgiving for our family...there is never a shortage of Spanish food and conversation. I took three semesters in college, but they talk way too fast for me to translate. LOL

  9. Jordan's a cutie!

Of the books you downloaded, I can recommend BOX OF ROCKS and STORM CHASER. They're both great. Lisa's is on my TBR list.

  10. He's so adorable! I can totally relate to this, my father's side of the family is entirely Mexican and my mother's is about as Anglo as you can get, so we ping ponged back and forth between Mexican celebrations completely in Spanish and regular ones in English. (and yeah, huge difference between Mexican Spanish and text book Spanish!) The blog made me smile, can't wait to see the continuing adventures as the baby hits new milestones!

  11. Hey, everyone: I loved your comments about your own experiences at Spanish-Mexican functions. Thank you for the well-wishes, too.

@Norma: I can hardly wait to read your two suggestions.

  14. Your grandbaby is so cute. Congratulations! I have an aunt that throws baby showers for everyone in the family. They are exactly the same - same games, same food, same location, everyone sits in the same seats - it's torture.

  15. Shelly--you won't be disappointed! Wonderful books...but then, as you know, their authors are pretty terrific people.

  16. @Ella: Thank you. And yes, he's like looking at a darker version of my daughter.

    @Allison: Thanks for stopping by.

@Tonja: Thanks. I hate being tortured like that.

@Norma: I'm sure. I can't wait to settle in and begin reading. I read the excerpt to The Spell. Great premise but breaks all the rules in fiction writing. I hope it doesn't drag on and on in tell mode like the prologue and first two chapters. I hate when my editor goes into auto-pilot. When I read, it has a tendency to do this. OMG.

    @Rob-bear: I'm sure I could've expounded further.
