In My Family Tree

A couple months back my dad made a discovery through researching our family tree. We’re related to George C. Hull, a real writer. Dad says he’s a first cousin five times removed from his side of the family.

Mr. Hull was born January 28, 1878 and was a newspaper and magazine writer.  He also had fifty titles to his credits. And I believe a couple of his novels made it to the silent screen. How cool is that? Now I know where I get the urge to write from.

You can find all fifty titles HERE if you’re interested.

Have a great day all!

Shelly

  1. My researches about twenty five years ago revealed that one of my relatives was hanged for stealing a sheep about 150 years ago. Doesn't have the same impact, really. Luckily I haven't inherited his particular passion.

    1. I had an ancestor who was a Revolutionary War veteran in North Carolina ... but who then fled into the Appalachians after killing someone, and we've been heading northwest ever since. I'm not sure most of my ancestors could read, let alone write.

  2. That's so interesting. Most of my ancestors couldn't read or write and most of the boys were listed on the census as farm laborers at the age of 12 and the girls were listed as housekeeper.

    1. Tonja,

It was sooo exciting to know this. There is also another author in my family who wrote text books for a living.

  3. Yes, the creativity gene is a strong one in your family and mine too. Hope Glowstick writes books someday too!

    1. When Glowstick finally grows up he'll have a wide variety of fodder to choose from. His novels should be interesting.

  4. That is great, Shelly. Wish I knew where I got my creative talents from. Each side wanted to take credit (^;

I was stunned because peeps on my mom's side are about as intellectual as a wall and don't care for books and education like I do. I was always the misfit. When I graduated from college I was told I proved my point. I graduated college with double honors, too.

  5. One of my distant relations worked as a landscape architect for the Dutch royal family, from what I'm told.

My sister-in-law comes from a family that includes General James Longstreet of the Confederate army among its ranks.

    1. Family history is sooo interesting, I'm so glad my dad takes the time to research it. We also had someone who was Napelaon's First General...something like that.

  6. See, it's in you blood. I don't know where my creativity came from. My mom worked for the Hungarian embassy and my dad spied on Russia. I wish I knew more about my distant family history.

  7. That's a pretty impressive body of film writing. I wonder how many of those films can still be seen. Have you seen any of them?

  8. That is cool that you can claim the relationship to George C. Hull. My genealogy research has dug up no writers, to date anyway. Now I'm off to check on that list!

  9. That is so awesome! Think there have been a couple of poets in my family throughout the years, but not anything serious. I this acorn was carried off by the birds and dropped in a bush somewhere. lol

  11. That's cool Shelly. I'm related to a famous writer too, and his grand daughter who was also a writer. Maybe it's no accident that we like to write.

    1. Maybe not. When little I really wanted to be a jouranlist and a novelist but I got detoured into another direction for awhile.

  13. That is so cool. I don't take after my ancestors so much. I had one grandfather who was known for being a moonshiner but I'm law abiding.

  19. Shelly,

That is very cool! I believe some talents are indeed inherited. I need to research more about my family, but on my Dad's side his grandfather was the founder of Bluefield, West Virginia (the local professor wrote a book about it and gave one to my father) and supposedly through some Scotish roots we are related to poet Robert Burns. Genealogy is real fascinating. Most of my family though are Irish and German. That is where I get my stubborness from! Take care, Shelly!
